The Unemployed |
||
The Unemployed visualizes world wide unemployment. Using data culled from online sources that list unemployment rates by country, The Unemployed represents the jobless as animated figures. The number of unemployed varies from country to country ranging from a few thousand in sparsely populated places to many millions. Each tap to the screen reveals a different array of figures, depicted as aimless wanderers moving within the confines of their country's borders. The clusters of figures metaphorically become an available labor force, as well as the visible presence of the jobless. The Unemployed was originally part of the iOS app Urban Rhythms created using openFrameworks for iPhone. The flocking algorithms are modifications to code originally written by Daniel Shiffman. David Nolen coded the motion of the figures. Jeremy Rotsztain adapted the code for the original App. Colin Honigman extracted the The Unemployed from Urban Rhythms and coded this version of the app. To see unemployment stats click here. |
