FREEWALL is an exhibition of site specific artworks by ten Los Angeles based artists who have been invited to create temporary works directly on the walls of the W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
The ideas behind the exhibition ask the artists to leave the privacy of their studio behind as well as the notion of art as an object or commodity and to bring their supplies and ideas to the space. Here they will engage with the walls to create a unique artwork that takes into consideration the location, environment, and architecture of the space.
Each artist has selected a wall and will spend two to three weeks in the gallery creating their work. Rather than bring finished paintings and objects to the gallery these artists will develop their paintings on site. Usually an artist works alone in his or her studio but these artists have agreed to make their work in public, well aware that the gallery will be open during the installation period for students as well as gallery visitors to engage with them about their process and the development of their work.
At the end of the exhibition all the artworks will be painted over. Site specific wall works are prevalent in museum and gallery exhibitions but usually there is only one. This purpose of this exhibition is to create an environment of installations.
The chosen artists all approach their work differently, and for some this will be their first opportunity to create a large-scale wall work. There will be a sharing of ideas between the artists as well as the creation of some collaborative works. The gallery will be open for viewers to see the works in progress.
